904L stainless steel is a low-carbon, high-nickel, molybdenum austenitic stainless steel, also known as super austenitic stainless steel. It is a proprietary material introduced by the French H·S company. 904L stainless steel has excellent activation-passivation transition ability and excellent corrosion resistance.

Introduction to the corrosion resistance of 904L stainless steel

904L stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance. Here are some features regarding its corrosion resistance:

Low carbon content: Due to the low carbon content (only 0.020%), no carbide precipitation will occur under normal heat treatment and welding conditions, thus eliminating the risk of intergranular corrosion.

Passivation performance for reducing environments: Due to the high chromium nickel molybdenum content and added copper element of 904L, it can still be passivated and has corrosion resistance even in reducing environments, such as sulfuric acid and formic acid.

High nickel content: The high nickel content makes 904L have a low corrosion rate even in the active state.

Anti-sulfuric acid corrosion performance: In pure sulfuric acid with a concentration range of 0~98%, 904L can be used at a temperature of up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Anti-corrosion performance of phosphoric acid: In pure phosphoric acid in the concentration range of 0~85%, 904L has good anti-corrosion performance.

Resistance to pitting corrosion: 904L has high resistance to pitting corrosion and also shows good resistance to crevice corrosion in chloride solutions.

Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking: Due to its high nickel content, 904L has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride solutions, concentrated hydroxide solutions, and hydrogen sulfide-rich environments.
